DIRTY LAUNDRY: Thieves Laundry Soap

If there’s anything I know how to do well, it’s laundry. In particular, doing laundry with Young Living products has become an area of expertise that I have pretty much perfected in my home. I have it down to an art. I am a mom of four young kids, ages 7 and under, and I wash a LOT of dirty clothes in my house. For the last many years, we have been in varying stages of potty training, cloth diapering, had a baby with insane acid reflux and projectile vomiting, played sports, spilled all the things, and lived a lot of life. For real though…kids have no respect for mom’s sentimental favorites, special occasion outfits, items you intend for resale, and they definitely will not hesitate to eat a red popsicle in their Sunday best on a hot day. And at the end of that hot day, it’s usually up to Mom to figure out damage control. To me, it’s important to be able to save the clothing from certain doom without compromising my kids’ health – both immediate and long-term.

Once upon a time, I had a history of severe asthma, chronic acute bronchitis, and headaches. I also have one child who has a neurodevelopment/epileptic disorder, and so eliminating neurotoxins in my home is a BIG. DEAL.  Today, I have none of those complaints. My home is free of anything containing harsh chemicals that could further inhibit my son’s brain development or trigger seizures, and not a single one of my children has any breathing problems or headaches.

The more I dug into the things I was using in my home, the more I realized that my respiratory complaints were linked to fragrances. I learned that laundry soap is considered by the Environmental Protection Agency to be one of the top ten most dangerous household substances (Top Ten Killer Household Chemicals Study. Optical brighteners, fragrances, all kinds of things outgassing in my closet – literally polluting the airspace in my own home – and soaking into my skin…it’s no wonder I was so sick all.the.time.

Thus, it became a mission in my home to find the answers to all things laundry and to become the Young Living laundry solutions expert.  I was absolutely determined not to resort to a single commercial laundry product – whether for washing, stain removal, fabric softening, or fragrance. And guess what? Mission accomplished.

Let’s face it – there aren’t a whole lot of natural laundry soap products out there that:

  • are truly non-toxic (don’t fall for the greenwashing, folks. Go through ingredients with a fine tooth comb and do your homework!),
  • actually work, and
  • are affordable for the average family.

Thankfully, Thieves Laundry Soap checks all of those boxes.

I was SO EXCITED when Young Living added a laundry soap to the Thieves product line a few years ago. I quickly purchased it and never looked back. As my laundry skills and challenges evolved, so did my laundry soap recipe. I noticed patterns in the products I was using to enhance the soap.  I always added a capful of Thieves cleaner for an extra boost when I washed a load of stinky sheets or towels or soiled bedding (why do those stomach bugs aaalllways seem to hit during the NIGHT?! Ugh!). Then I noticed that spot treating stains with my laundry soap and a drop or two of DiGize essential oil (as the enzymatic component) was highly effective.  When I was up against sweat stains in sheets, or looking to brighten up my whites, I usually tossed in several drops of Lemon essential oil (a natural brightener) and hydrogen peroxide, in addition to spraying the sheets with Thieves Household Cleaner prior to washingPrint.

One day I decided there were too many steps and variables in my laundry routine, and began to experiment with combining all of those ingredients together in one jar to simplify my life a little bit. The results were incredible and consistent. To this day, the Facebook Live video I did to demonstrate how to make it, is one of my top viewed and shared posts of my entire career. At least once a week, somebody messages me and asks for my recipe.  Granted, since I posted that video, I have continued experimenting, but y’all – it’s so good that it removes set in stains, even months after the fact when I’ve been prepping clothes for consignment sales. AND it even scrubs TOUGH stains out of carpet. (Again with those middle of the night stomach bugs and nose bleeds…I promise, it’s a conspiracy!)

I love the feedback and love I’ve received from Young Living members regarding this recipe that has become known in my group as “Amped-Up Thieves Laundry Soap.”

Here’s the recipe!  By the way, Young Living products are SO concentrated, that in the case of most of our Thieves cleaning products, they can be heavily diluted without affecting performance. Hence, this recipe makes my ONE purchased bottle of laundry soap last 4 to 5 MONTHS for my family of six.

Amped-Up Thieves Laundry Soap:Laundry soap jar

{Combine all of these ingredients into a one-gallon GLASS iced-tea jar with a spout -OR- Two 32 oz glass bottles with pumps from Amazon (yes, they exist!). The bottles/pumps tend to be a little less messy to dispense, as the spout on my jar tends to drip a bit.}

Ingredients: (in this order)

  • 1/2 (16oz) of a bottle  Thieves Laundry Soap
  • 3 capfuls of Thieves Cleaner
  • 10 drops EACH of the following essential oils (the past two times I have doubled the amount of these oils to 20 drops each):  Lemon, DiGize, Tea Tree, and Lemongrass
  • Optional oils (same amounts): Purification, Thieves, Citrus Fresh
  • 6 cups HOT water  – add this LAST so that you can give it all a good stir.
  • **Note: I mentioned hydrogen peroxide earlier, but I choose to add it as an individual component to white loads, and I do NOT add it to my soap recipe.

Use 1 Tbsp per extra large load.  (I have a HUGE high-efficiency washing machine)

This soap recipe also makes an EXCELLENT spot treatment for stains. Just dab a small amount onto the stain and scrub it in with a toothbrush. And I’m just sayin – I’ve been known to scrub a Tbsp or so on carpet stains, whether from kids or dogs. It worked so well that we discovered the original color of the carpet was SEVERAL shades lighter than the rest of the room!

Give it a try and let me know what you think!
