Homework Helpers

It’s the beginning of a new school year, the excitement of back-to-school has worn off, and those kiddos of yours are settling into homework routines.  Or are they?  One of my kids takes to school and all that it entails like a duck to water – the other, not so much.  Don’t get me wrong – she’s smart as a whip. As a first grader, she can read confidently and she enjoys math just like her older sister.  But, harnessing her active mind and body has been a challenge when it comes to classwork and homework. She loves free play, and doing worksheets is so not her jam.  For most of kindergarten, we had reading practice two nights a week, and a few class sheets that came home with her because of being distracted in class. Add in some significant sensory processing challenges, and by the end of the school day, she was just over it.  If I was not totally on top of her to get her wiggles out and do her homework, then one handwriting page and two reading pages would literally eat up our whole evening.

Needless to say, coming back into a new school year has been an adjustment and a half for this busy girl, who loves to daydream of unicorns and tells fantastic stories.  We’re three-and-a-half weeks into school now, and by implementing a few things into her routine morning and evening, including some sensory diet suggestions from her occupational therapist, we are finally hitting our stride this week.

Of course, Young Living Essential Oils and supplements play a HUGE part in our success.

{Disclaimer: I’m not here to diagnose, treat, or prescribe anything, and as always, consult with your healthcare provider if you feel necessary.}

But I am going to share with you a few of the things we’ve started doing to get her day moving in the right direction, and to keep those brain cells firing long enough to complete afternoon homework (usually reading and spelling words, and any class work that she did not complete – although that has been less this week!)

Her morning routine includes a 2oz shot of Ningxia Red (antioxidants and immune support), with one sachet of MindWise (CoQ10 supplement – read more here) mixed in, and a small amount of Mineral Essence.  Our brains and bodies simply cannot function well or on the same page if we do not supply necessary trace minerals.  She also eats a good breakfast – usually a breakfast sandwich with sausage, scrambled eggs, and cheese. (I batch prep these on the weekend. I am so not supermom on a school morning!).

We place a heavy emphasis on good gut health, because a happy gut = a happy brain. This sweet thing has had more trouble with gut health and sluggish bowels, and those days tend to coincide with her less focused days. So with each meal, she takes  KidScents MightyZymes (digestive enzymes) and in the evening at bedtime, she also takes a
KidScents MightyPro stick (prebiotic + probiotic supplement for specially formulated for kiddos). I’m also the mean mom and restrict sugar in a big way.

After school, she eats a good snack in the car (or finishes her lunch), and we get home and do our sensory diet routine that was written out by her occupational therapist using equipment we already have in our home.  This includes swinging, jumping on the trampoline  (ours is a mini one that stays inside), wall push-ups, wheelbarrow walks, bear crawls, joint compressions, and dry brushing.  All of this movement helps to get her wiggles out and set her up with some willingness to sit and listen in class, as well as helps to desensitize her to some of her tactile defensiveness (things like socks and clothing can be a real distraction for her).  Then we use our oils and it is homework time!

We also apply a blend of oils to the crown of her head and the nape of her neck each and every morning, and again when we get home from school.

Let me tell you – before this blend of oils happened, there wasn’t ANYTHING making this child sit still and focus to do the things.  She was everywhere. There were tears and wailing, temper tantrums, meltdowns over having to write one more spelling word, rolling all over the floor, climbing on the table, playing with all the clutter on the table, organizing her pencils and crayons in rainbow order and meltdowns when a color was missing…  Guys.  Dramatic is a colossal understatement.

After about three weeks of this madness in KINDERGARTEN, I’d had ENOUGH.  And as a seasoned oiler by that point, (who was also supporting a special needs child with a neurological disorder!), I have no idea why it took me so long to go to my oils to support HER brain as well.  I looked in my reference book, found a few ideas, and made up a blend of Lavender, Cedarwood, Frankincense, Vetiver, and Valor.  Just a few drops of each, blended them all together, and applied to her ear lobes and back of her neck. Then I had her sit there and smell them.

The. Difference. Was. Instant.

I sat her down to do her handwriting page that day and within five minutes, she brought me a completed worksheet.

That same page had come home in her folder three days in a row because we just couldn’t get it together. And just like that, it was finished.

I tried again the next day. And the next. Same results.  And this year, it only took me a few days to remember that I needed to pull out her A-game oil to settle into the groove of homework.

We’ve had success with a couple of Young Living blends recently also, including Grounding blend and KidScents Geneyus. blend. These blends are formulated to create a relaxing, grounded environment, to balance the brain, and induce productivity.  If you’re not the DIY type, those oils are easy to purchase all ready to go.  They can be applied topically or diffused.  I use both applications for best results.

These two blends can be ordered here with a retail or wholesale account -24% difference in pricing – and three of the others are in the starter kit. Scroll to the bottom or see this post for more details on how to order, and you will need a sponsor number to order –

And y’all, they WORK.  Not surprisingly, they are her favorites and she has free access to them any time she needs them. Even my older daughter, my hard working, straight-A student, sometimes needs a little motivation to finish her homework, and she uses them too. The same oil blends help my two-year-old to sit and color quietly while I work from home or to pass time in a waiting room while her brother is in therapy, and it supports my special needs child in overcoming some tremoring activity to pull his fine motor skills into focus.

Shoot – it even helps ME (and the kids) to complete housework and chores in a timely manner.

I interviewed my first grader about this a few days ago, after we nipped some homework drama in the bud, and asked her what changed.  She said “I put my oil on and my work didn’t feel so big. I felt like I could do it. So I did it!”  Guys, she was just so proud of herself!!!

The total picture of nutrition, supplements, sensory tools, and essential oils has been a GAME-CHANGER where school work is involved. No more drama. No more tears. Just a neatly-packaged homework session that is over and done with in 20-30 minutes.

With these measures (and of course with a consistent discipline strategy and natural consequences in place), she has since stopped getting in trouble at school. If your school’s administration allows essential oils, you can even send them to school with your child to apply during the times of the day when their attention span may struggle. (Check with the school nurse to see if they are allowed to carry in the backpack or if they have to be left in the nurse’s office. They are not medications, and some schools allow kids to keep them with their belongings.)

I could not be more grateful for Young Living Essential Oils in my life!!  You can begin your shopping experience here as a retail customer, or you can take the jump into essential oils with a Young Living Premium Starter Kit (read about it here!), which will actually include 3 of the oils mentioned here (12 total) as well as a diffuser, samples of Ningxia Red, Thieves Household Cleaner, Thieves Hand Purifier, and more.  Lavender, Frankincense, and Valor are all in the Premium Starter Kit, by the way, and even just diffusing those three together in the starter kit diffuser makes a huge difference in creating a calm environment to focus and accomplish assignments.

The easiest, biggest-bang-for-your-buck way to jumpstart your Young Living Life Upgrade!

There’s nothing like feeling so empowered as Mama to help your busy kiddos get through something as simple as a homework assignment. I highly encourage you to invest in the tools to upgrade your family’s lifestyle and make homework drama a thing of the past.
